What Inspired You to Choose This Activity?

AFTER HEARING AND READING COUNTLESS COMPLAINTS AND STRUGGLES MADE BY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS JUST LIKE MYSELF ABOUT WHAT WE'RE BEING TAUGHT, I REALIZED I WASN'T ALONE IN THIS FIGHT FOR RELEVANT EDUCATION. TOO MANY TIMES HAVE I SEEN MY CLASSMATES FALL ASLEEP DURING A BORING OR UNIMPORTANT LECTURE. TOO MANY TIMES HAVE I SEEN OTHER STUDENTS LOSE SLEEP OVER LOADS OF HOMEWORK AND POINTLESS PACKETS. TOO MANY TIMES HAVE I SEEN MY FRIENDS GET FRUSTRATED WITH HOW WE'RE BEING GRADED AND TAUGHT. THE EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS OF HIGH SCHOOLS ACROSS THE NATION HAVE DECAYED TO THE POINT WHERE STUDENTS LOSE THEIR PASSION FOR LEARNING. TO TEACHERS, A STUDENT'S ATTITUDE MAY COME OFF AS IGNORANT AND DISRESPECTFUL; HOWEVER, THAT IS CERTAINLY NOT THE CASE. WE ALL WISH TO LEARN, BUT WE WISH TO LEARN ABOUT TOPICS THAT HELP US BETTER NAVIGATE OUR WORLD, AND WE WISH TO LEARN IN WAYS THAT SERVE OUR INDIVIDUAL STRENGTHS AND PASSIONS. AS HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, IT OFTEN FEELS LIKE WE’RE ALL PREPARING FOR COLLEGE AND THE FUTURE/REAL WORLD ALONE. WHEN WE FEEL THAT OUR TEACHERS AND CLASSES WE TAKE ARE UNFIT TO ADDRESS OUR NEEDS, WE LOSE PURPOSE. WHEN WE ARE OUTPERFORMED ON STANDARDIZED TESTS BY PEERS THAT HAPPEN TO EXCEL AT PARTICULAR SUBJECTS, WE THINK WE ARE DUMB. WHEN WE SPEND MORE TIME DERIVING DRY PLOTS FROM OLD, DEAD NOVELS COMPARED TO ANALYZING MODERN MULTIMEDIA AND RELEVANT TEXTS, WE FIND SCHOOL ITSELF BORING. RATHER THAN STUDYING FOR THE NEXT MULTIPLE CHOICE TEST, THOUSANDS OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ALTERNATIVELY SEARCH FOR THE NEXT ANSWER KEY OR QUIZLET. INSTEAD OF PUNISHING STUDENTS FOR CHEATING, I'D LIKE TO ASK OUR CURRICULUM DEVELOPERS: WHY DON'T YOU JUST TEACH BETTER CURRICULUM? OR WHY DON'T YOU PREPARE US BETTER? HOWEVER, WITH ALL THIS BEING SAID, WE CANNOT SIMPLY SIT BACK AND LET THE ISSUE SOLVE ITSELF; WE MUST TAKE IT UPON OURSELVES TO CONTACT OUR LEGISLATORS, LOCAL COUNCIL MEMBERS AND SENATORS TO COMPROMISE AND RESOLVE THIS ISSUE.

WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL INVESTMENT IN THIS ORGANIZATION?

MY PERSONAL INVESTMENT IN POSI-PURGE IS THAT I HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE THE FIRST STEP IN MY LOCAL COMMUNITY IN MAKING A POLITICAL STATEMENT REGARDING THE CURRENT PUBLIC EDUCATIONAL CRISIS. WITH AN UNQUALIFIED SECRETARY OF PUBLIC EDUCATION WHO HAS HAD NO EXPERIENCE WITH THE MATTER ITSELF, NOT ONLY TO I GET TO EDUCATE MYSELF, BUT I ALSO GET THE OPPORTUNITY TO PRODUCE AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN MY LOCAL COMMUNITY CAN: EXPRESS THEIR FRUSTRATIONS WITH OUR STANDARDS, SUGGEST ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS TO THESE ISSUES, AND FUNDRAISE TO DONATE TO SCHOOLS IN LOWER-INCOME AREAS. AFTER ALL, SOME EDUCATION IS BETTER THAN NO EDUCATION; HOWEVER, THAT DOES NOT MEAN WE CAN'T MAKE CHANGE TO WHAT WE HAVE NOW.

SHORT TERM GOALS?

THROUGH RESEARCH, BLOGS, AND PROJECTS, I WILL BE ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN DISCERNING TOPICS RELEVANT TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND CREATING OPPORTUNITIES FOR MORE DYNAMIC AND RELEVANT EDUCATION. I PLAN TO CREATE MY OWN HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULUM, INFORMED BY MY PEERS AND BACKED BY INDEPENDENT RESEARCH, THAT FOCUS ON RELEVANCY AND PRACTICALITY AND ENACT THIS CURRICULUM THROUGH EDUCATION SEMINARS, MEANINGFUL DISCUSSIONS, AND MORE. I WISH TO SPREAD KNOWLEDGE AND EDUCATE MY PEERS ABOUT TOPICS IN THE WORLD THAT REQUIRE CRITICAL THINKING AND ANALYZING. FOR EXAMPLE, DISCUSSIONS REGARDING POLITICS, FINANCIAL LITERACY, TERRORISM AND OTHER GLOBAL ISSUES WOULD BE, WHAT I BELIEVE, TRULY BENEFICIAL TO MY LOCAL COMMUNITY.

WHAT IS YOUR

LONG TERM GOAL?

MY ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO CHANGE OUR EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM AND STANDARDS. I ENVISION A MORE DYNAMIC AND VERSATILE EDUCATION SYSTEM THAT CATERS TO EVERY STUDENT AND MAKES SCHOOL AN ENJOYABLE ENVIRONMENT INSTEAD OF A DREADFUL PLACE WE ALL HAVE TO BE. MY HOPE IS THAT OUR STANDARDS WILL TEACH STUDENTS THE SKILLS THEY NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN LIFE (CRITICAL THINKING, GETTING A JOB, WRITING RESUMES, ETC.), HELP STUDENTS HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THEIR IDENTITY AND THEIR PLACE IN THE WORLD, AND OVERCOME LEARNING OBSTACLES. I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT EDUCATION CAN BE ENTERTAINING, FLEXIBLE, AND MEANINGFUL; WHO'S BETTER TO CULTIVATE THIS CHANGE THAN STUDENTS THEMSELVES?
