The American Music Awards and Pentagon Cyber Vulnerabilities

The American Music Awards of 2018 is taking place today, and quite a lot of coverage has been focused on this event. One example is this article by Daily Mail, which talks about Taylor Swift's outfit that she wore on Tuesday. The article mainly just consists of photos of her as she looked like a" metallic retro chic in a Balmain mini dress and thigh-high boots." The only other piece of information that could be taken away from this article was that she was competing for Artist of the Year against figures like Drake and Post Malone.

However, NPR reported today that many of the Pentagon's newly developed weapons had major cyber vulnerabilities, which was highlighted in the recent GAO (Government Accountability Office)

report. NPR explained that the report remarked that "the Pentagon was 'just beginning to grapple' with the scale of vulnerabilities in its weapons systems." The GAO report continues, claiming that using "relatively simple tools and techniques, testers were able to take control of systems and largely operate undetected." There were some instances where just scanning the computer system led to it shutting down. This is a critical issue, as the Department of Defense plans to spend "around $1.66 trillion to develop its current portfolio of major weapon systems." This includes more computerized systems. In addition, these cyber vulnerabilities have only recently become a priority for the Pentagon.
